simKMU was a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics running from 2009 to 2011. The aim was developing “company-wide, process-integrated and web-based simulation services and business models for small and medium-sized companies”.

Based on our experiences from the learn2work digital factory simulation we developed the logistics simulation simPEL in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IPA. It was designed to address typical challenges of logistics. The main focus were small flow productions as they are common in small and medium-sized companies. The simulation’s central features are layout planning and exploring ideal dimensions for buffers.

In difference to the existing large-scale solutions like Plant Simulation or Process Designer simPEL addresses users with little previous knowledge and smaller time budget, e.g. production planners in small and medium-sized companies. For this reason simPEL is far less complex than these applications both in modeling and in handling. The web-based entry of parameters facilitates the modelling of company-specific problems.

During the project the simPEL prototype was evaluated in various companies. It is also documented on the simKMU-Website.
