Cooperation with SRH University Heidelberg

Coop-SRHSince 2013 more and more students of the SRH University Heidelberg are working in Korion development. Especially students and graduates of the department Virtual Realities in the computer science faculty made a very good impression.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Daniel Görlich heart and soul is poured into the studies, At the same time there is a high level of professional competencies: the future game developers usually come with a solid background in Maya, ZBrush, C# and Unity. Often they can work productively after a relatively short training period.

For this reason the cooperation with the SRH will be intensified. Starting in  August 2014 the supervision of student projects, internships and final theses will be simplified. Furthermore there will be guest lectures and joined research projects. An example of this cooperation is the user experience evaluation of the current mobile gaming project Space Battle Core.

Gamification at the fmx ’14

fmx-bannerIn the project motionEAP the University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Visualization and Interactive Sytems (VIS) together with Korion develops gamification elements which are integrated into work processes. To allow this, the movements of persons working at assembly tables are tracked with motion sensors. This results in feedback which is projected into the workspace in real-time. Currently such solutions are tested at the GWW.

The system’s potentials habe been demonstrated at the fmx 2014 in Stuttgart. Korion and VIS were exhibiting from Tu. 04/22 to Fr. 04/25 at booth 1.2.

Tangible and Intuitive Interaction – Video of Prototype

Tangible-InteractionTogether with the University of Stuttgart Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems (VIS) we are developing the prototype of a new kind of assistive system in the project motionEAP. The prototype combines the 3D-spaces of the depth sensors Kinect and Leap Motion. It detects individual fingers of both hands and allows to direct processes with simple gestures. Both gestures in space and touch events on the surface of the workspace are detected. At the same time the system allows to project videos or interactive 3D-spaces on any kind of surface.

As an example this allows to zoom or rotate a workpart through simple gestures. In future development iterations we will integrate object detection allowing a context- or product-specific feedback on processes, e.g. in manual assembly.

This context-aware feedback is a pre-requisite for the implementation of gamification components. These allow to integrate feedback smoothly and least disruptive while motivating the assistive system’s users.

Gips-Schuele-Award for Research on Assistive Systems

Award_Gips_SchueleOn October 23rd 2013 the Special-Research Award for Human-Technology-Interaction by the Gips-Schüle-Foundation was awarded to the project ASLM – the project preceding motionEAP.

With the research lab located at the University of Applied Sciences Esslingen, the project aimed to develop a new kind of assistive system to support persons with impairments in production environments. The new assistive system uses motion tracking and projection. Within the project gamification elements were explored to improve motivation and work satisfaction. The system was constructed and built with the support of the company Schnaithmann. The system was evaluated at the sheltered work organization BWH Heilbronn. We congratulate the three awardees.
